General business during the week has been unusually dull, most probably through being near the close of the month, but as the weather seems settled, and the roads are in much better condition, a good demand next month may be fairly anticipated. No sales of importance have take place during the week. The demand for sugar cannot be said to be brisk ; prices have an upward tendency owing to reports having been received in Melbourne that no shipments from the Mauritius are likely to come forward for some time. The advance in tobacco reported to have taken place in America is beginning to affect this market. Holders are very firm, although no decided advance can be said to have taken place. Brandies are slightly easier, but in the face of Hennesey’s realising 9s 4£d in London and the accounts from France, no permanent decline is likely to take place. Dried fruits remain firm at 4jd for currants and fid for Eleme raisins. Canales are in demand at lid, and kerosene at Is 9d. Mr Mercer reports for the week ending August 28: prices only : Fresh butter has been coming in more freely, and in a week or two will be very plentiful; it is still retailing at 2s per lb; salt butter, is fid per lb; side and , rolled bacon, la per lb, having advanced Id; ' Colonial bams, la to Is 2d per lb; English ham, although plentiful in the market, is little asked after, selling at la 4d to Is fid per lb; cheese is very plentiful, and for first-class quality lOd to Is per lb; eggs are still plentiful, and ft tailing at pfttfot at 1b 3d to Is id per dor.

THE SHARE market. Mr Hooper reports the share market for the past week as rather heavy, many of the stocks being remarkably dull of sale. A large number of Shotovers have changed hands at exceedingly low prices, viz. 3s to 3s 6d for LI paid-up shares. Mr Skene reports that there has been a firm and steady demand for industrious and willing people during the week. For all such the prospects are bright We can take as many country-bred people, &c., as choose to come, at the following wages : Ploughmen, shepherds, and gardeners, from Loo to L 65, and found ; married do, L 75, LBO, to L9O, if the wife is handy. Carpenters, 12s to 14s per day ; masons, 15s and 16s; brickmakers, 14s and 15s per 1,000. Tailors and shoemakers are getting good wages on piecework ; smart boys and girls, 6s, 7s, to 10s per week; laborers and stonebreakers, Bs, 9s, 10s, j T 2s n per dft y 5 servant girls, L 26, L3O, L 35, and L4O; cooks, housekeepers, and barmaids, 20s to 30s per week; clerks and counter hands are asked for.
