RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Saturday, August 29. (Before J. Bathgate, Esq., E.M.) Drunkenness.— Mary Keefe, Catherine Murphy, and John Wales were discharged with a caution; Alex. I hompson was fined 20s, with the option of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Neglected Children.— Emily Josephine Oswin (three years) and William Joshua Oswin were charged wiflh being neglected children. 'J he mother lived in King street, and was an habitual drunkard. Sergeant Dean, on visiting the place, found it in a most deplorable condition, there bein' nothing in it in the shape of bed-clothes' The mother was freqm-ntly in a state of drunkenness, and had drunken women in tbe place. The father was a contractor up country. When the children were taken away this morning the mother threatened to commit suicide, and a policeman had to bo left in charge. -f is Worship would send the children to the Industrial School for the shortest term he could. It was not fair that the country should have to provide for them. He would send them to the school for oni year, and inquiries as to the fgtWs whereabouts should be made. It was a case of the most gross neglect.
