Interim Secretary : Mr Hichard H. Leary. It will readily be conceded that one of the greatest wants in the principal cities of New Zealand is first-class hotel accommodation, to provide which wid involve a large expenditure, beyond the limits of individual capital This Company is formed for the purpose of erecting in Dunedin a first-class Hotel, similar in character to those existing in the large cities of Europe and Ameri a-one which will not only supply existing requirements but wil' offer special attractions and inducements to tourists and travellers to visit this part of New Zealand. it is proposed that the building to be erected shall contain 200 B droo m * # spacious Dining and Drawing Rooms, Library, Private Rooms for families, and all the neces ary adjuncts of a really first-class Hotel of the ki,ad indicated.
An unexceptionable freehold site has a’jvady been secured at moderate cost. It ia estimated that the coat of freehold land and buildings will not exceed L2Q 000 and the furniture and fittings L6,0Q0, thus th ® * Qtal Outlay required about LdO,UOO, Iq meet this cost, a paid-un capital of L 20.000 will be sufficient, as the balance can readfly be borrowed at a moderate rate of interest on the security of the Laud and Buildings. ' The profits realised by the leading hotels m London, fans, Berlin, St. Petersburg, and America, average 22 per cent, upon the amount of invested capital. From reliable information obtained from competent persons the promoters of the Southern Hotel Com* pany (Limited) are fully persuaded that, under careful management, the profl'g from this enterprise will provide a very handsome return for the capital subscribed. Exclusive of revenue derived from the hotel business proper, it is estimated that a considerable income will be received in the way of rent for the principal portion of the ground floor, which would be readily let for bhops, &c., and would not be required for hotel purposes. The promoters feel that it is almost superfluous to impress upon the citizens of Dunedin the great advantages which would accrue to their city from the successful development of such an enterprise as the one projected. The increase in the number of visitors to Dunedin would inevitably be accompanied by an increase in the vitality of every department of commerce and trade, and would thereby materially augment the prosperity of all classes of the community.
