THE GOVERNORSHIP.

The announcement of the resignation of Sir James Fergusson and the appointment of the Marquis of NormanbyHo succeed him in the Governorship of New Zealand, will take our readers by surprise. Sir James does nob appear to have succeeded in securing the attachment of the Colonists, and probably his withdrawal from the Governorship will not be much regretted. With the motives that have led to this step we are not acquainted ; most probably they are purely of a private character, far, so for as his public career is concerned, we consider it has not only been unexceptionable, but tempered with sagacity and discretion. The Maruis ©f Normanby, who is appointed to sueceed him. is thus noticed in “Men of f'hu Time ; *• The most noble George Augustus Constantine Phipps, only son of the first marquis, born July 23, 1819 entered the Soots Fusilier Guards in 1838, and was Controller and subseq gently Treasurer of the Queen’s Household from 1853 till 1858, when he was appointed Governor of Nova Scotia. As Lord Mulgrave, he was member for Scarborough in the Libeinterest from 1817 till 1851, and from 1852 till 1857. He was sworn a Privy Councillor in 1851, and succeeded to his father’s title July 28, 1863, when he resigned his foreign appointment and returned to England. He wag appointed Captain of tho corps of GenUemen-at-Arms, December 17, 1859, and held that office till April 8, 1871* when be was nominated Governor of Queensland.”
