(Via Auckland .) T Sydney. In consequence of the break down of the Californian service, the Government have determined to carry on the service in the meantime themselves. T .. Melbourne. Jjurlme and Papapa are reported to have suffered a good deal on the voyage. Lurline will not be sent to Sydney, being reserved for the Melbourne events. New teas are moving off steadily at advanced rates, Madame Arabella Goddard proceeds to Dunedin, via., Melbourne, after performing at Bathurst. The brig Ellen Morris has been totally wrecked at New Caledonia. A young man named Alexander Cairns has attempted suicide—first by cutting his throat, and then by drowning himself. A Chinaman has been found hanging to some trees in the Creswick range. .Mr Edward Ainaley, produce merchant, convicted of forgery, has besn sentenced to three years penal servitude. At Sandhurst the dividend for a week amounted to over LIB,OOO. Business is very dull; there is nothing doing. There remain fifty-one entries for the Melbourne Cup. The horses scratched are;— Ace of Trumps, Sir Bedivere, Electricity, Calumny, Here Goes, Prophet, Queen of Clubs, beaspray, Misty Morn, Sunlight, Zanco, May King, Maid of Avenel, Calaba, May Day, Echo, Burwood, Excelsior, Strop, All Fours, Conqueror, Beltram, Stockbridge, Zetland, Persian Colt, Waimea, Novice, Blink Bonny. _ Adelaide. Mr Boss telegraphs to Mr Elder, from Beltana, to the following effect“ Obliged to return through want of water. No rain has fallen for a long time. The horses e V0 j Bevera l times been without water for days together. There is a great extent of neuralgia. The sorub is in immense quantities, and the underwood prevented ns from using the camels for trying the country for water. The farthest course was latitude 60 degress 25 min. ; longtitude, 131 dgrees 06 min. Very few Natives were seen; on every occasion they were making towards the sea coast. They were very wild, and I was unable to get within speaking distance of them. The country traversed was high, open, undulating, and table land, with dense murlga shrub. There is a great extent of open undulating plains, magnificently grassed.
