The amount of revenue received at the Cu» (in-house or. *,oods cleared for consumption this day was L 356 8a 10d. We hear that a large gale of Glen sections will take place about the *qd of this month. Persons on the look-out for suitable building sites will do well to keep this in mind, as the sections to be offered are some of the /choicest in the Glen estate. No increased demand for goods has been perceptible in the general market during the week, which, on the whole, has been a somewhat slack u>ne. The cargo of Mauritius sugar, ex Victorine, was offered for sale at the rooms of Messrs M'Landresa, Hepburn, and Co. The attendance of the trade was large, but the biddings were not spirited. A few lines found buyers. •Finest whites were placed at L 36, and good yellows at L 33 15s. We are informed that several sales were effected privately after the Auction sale. The same firm offered a large assortment of general merchandise on Thursday, and succeeded in placing a considerable quantity of goods at fair prices. Aft invoice of (wines found buyers at from 10|d to Is o£d, and Cros&e and Blackwell’s oilman’s stores realised ■fair prices. The sales privately during the week have been very limited. Brandy is slightly easier, a rather unexpected circumstauce in the face of advices received .from Home of advancing rates in France. It is understood, however, that heavy shipments hgvg been made for Melbourne, and, in consequence, a large supply Is expected in that market. Under the circumstances it is not believed,there will be any permanent decline, and by well-informed houses a reaction is anticipated. Part of the first shipment of new season’s tea to Melbourne hare arrived by the Otago. We learn that advices have been received that the new crop is generally inferior in quality to last year’s importations, And that prices opened at an advance in China of three taels, as compared with last season. Beer continues in good supply, with a tendency to easier rate*. Currants are firm at 4|d. Ip dairy produce, no change has taken place. Mercer reports for the week ending August 15 '.—Retail prices pnly : Since my last report there has been little op no alteration excepting in fresh butter, which stiff continues to be scarce, and the demand great, so that anything like passable butter is 2s per lb; salt butter celling well lately at Is 6d to Is 8d per lb. Side and rolled bacon, lOd to Is. Colomial hams, Is to la 2d per lb ; beef bam, 7d to id ; boiled beef ham, 9d. Best cheese, lOd to Is per lb, and nothing but good quality will ;aeli. English hams, la Id to la 6d, but very unsaleable. Eggs are very plentiful, and in good demand at Is 9d per dozen. THE LABOR MARKET, Mr Skene reports that the demand for suitable people of all kin d is beyond the supply, and likely to continue. Wages are as follows: —Farm labourers, well up to ploughing, etc., get from L 55 to L 6 5; if iftwpied, L7O, L 75, and LBO. Shepherds and gardeners about the same. Female servants get L 26, L3Q, L'3s, and L4O. Barmaids, cooks, and housekeeper, from 20s to 30s per week. Nurse girls, 6s, 7s, sind Ss per week. Office boys, 8s and 10s per week. Masons, carpenters, and bricklayei-s are getting busy, .at 12a to 14s per diem. Indoor trades, tailors, shoemakers, etc., are active, getting from L 3 5s to L 4 at piece work. Sturdy laborers are asked for Bs, 9s, and 10s is going for such. Ships’ stewards, cooks, shopmen” and clerks are at the dullest now, but a very abort time will bring a demand for them. THE SHARE MARKET. Mr Hooper reports that the. share market is active and some stocks are much firmer, notably the South British Insurance, National Insuraace. Star of the East, and Shotover Gold Mining. Standard Insurance, National Bank, and Arrow River Gold Mining h#>VP slightly ; declined. Mosgiel woollen, Grey mouth coal mining, and Walton Park coal mining are unsaleable except at very low rates.
