Hokitika, August 14. A miner named Christian Lawson has been accidentally shot at Greek’s Gully, the gun going off own hands when out shooting in company with his mates. An inquest was held yesterday. Deceased’s wife and family arrived at Wellington only five days ago, and he had intended meeting them there by the next steamer. Auckland, August 13. A. strong feeling exists re Vogel’s North Island province resolutions. The ‘ Cross ’ condemns the action of the Government, and says that, in the event of a defeat and dissolution, unless Mr Vogel’s arguments are very convincing mdeed, we do not believe the result of the election would, so far as Auckland is concerned, strengthen hia hands on this question.” The Herald ’ denies that the arrangement of 1856 was anything but to remove then existing inequalities, and it was never known as % binding compact for years after 1856. The ‘Star’ denounces the scheme as so palpably unfair, and so grossly insulting, that it will rouse a dormant feeling m the North that it will be difficult to allay. No man dare appear on the Auckland hustings and announce himself a supporter of such a policy. Westport, August 13. Work on the railway was commenced this rn^s " Sixt y wor kmcn are clearing timber.
