Wellington, August 12. A telegram, dated Loudon, July 31, was received. to-day from the Agent-General, announcing that during the mouth the following ships have sailed for the Colony The Star of India, with 370 immigrants, for Wellington ; Bebington and Denny, with 580, for Napier; Zealandia and Jackson, 040, for Auckland * Chile, 220, for Nelson ; Duke of Edinburgh, 340, for Lyttelton ; luvercauld and Headman, 720, for Otago. The following railway plant and material have been despatched during July :—Six locomotives and eight carriages ; 700 tons of rails, and 2GO tons of bridge work. The adjourned meeting of immigrants, to consider petitioning Parliament asking to be excused from paying the remaining amount due on their promissory notes, was held today ; Mr Hedges in the chair. After reading the petition, the chairman solicited the opinion of the meeting on the subject. A number of those present spoke on different points. One speaker thought the political economists of the House of Kepresentatives would do well to favorably consider their petition; else some might prefer going to Victoria or New South Wales, rather than have to pay some L3O or L4O, when immigrants were now coming out to the Colony without paying anything. Another said he did not think it fair or honest on the part of the Government to double the amount of the passage in the Colony, because they were unable to pay it beforehand. Ultimately*’a petition was adopted, and it was agreed that it should be left at the ‘ Tribune ’ office till Friday morning for signatures, when it will be presented to Parliament. m, .
