A TALL TOWER.
It is said that Messrs Clark, Reeves, and Co. are the designers of the proposed Centennial Tower (which is to be one thousand feet high), and it is to be executed at the Phcenixville Bridge Works, Philadelphia, of American wrought iron throughout. It is to be 520 feet higher than the great pyramid of Cheops, 532 feet higher than the Strasburg Minster, 543 feet higher than the dome of St. Peter’s at Rome, Michael Angelo’s greatest work ; 546 feet higher than St: Paul’s, London, Christophen’s Wren’s masterpiece; 713 feet higher than the Capitol at Washington, and it is to be circular in its form, with a base of 150 feet in diameter, diminishing to 30 feet at the top. Through its entire length there is to be a central tube, with four elevators capable of carrying 500 persona up and down per hour at the rate of three minutes up and five minutes down, and around the central tube there is to be a spiral staircase for such as prefer that mode of ascending and descending. The estimated cost of the fabric is 1,000,000 dollars, say L 200,000 to L 250,000 sterling, and the time to be occupied in its construction one year. Its location is to be Fair mount Park, in close proximity to the grounds on which the building for the Great Centennial Exhibition is being erected.
It is related that the sexton of a church, having to be away from his duties one day, got a substitute who was not acquainted with the congregation, and who became much excited when he saw an old man come into one of the pews and raise a peculiarly-shaped ear-trumpet to his face. Springing to his side, he said something in a low voice; whereupon the gentleman endeavored to raise the trumpet to his ear, but was prevented by the sexton seizing his hand. tVith increased voice and excitement, he said, You mustn’t, sir—you mustn’t blow that horn in here. If you do I shall be obliged to put you out,” And the good old man, pocketing his bugle, heard nothing of service or sermon.
