HIGH WARD ELECTION.

To the Editor.

Sir, —I was present at both meetings of the candidates last evening, and was greatly pleased with the gentlemanly way they spoke of one another. They only ask to be returned on their own merits. Mr Barron has greatly the advantage of Mr Hutchison in point of education and docidcdnr.ss of views. He seems to be above suiting his views merely to catch applause and gain votes from those listening to him. Now this is rather a rare qualification-in candidate:,, and I like him all the more for it. Mr Hutchison, on the other hand, seems a most estimable man ; but, unfortunately, his previous training is rather against his taking a prominent part in public affairs. I have no doubt he is j ust as anxious to do good to the citizens as his opponent; but from his utterances last night, which were crude in the extreme, I don’t think it at all likely that he would have much weight in the City Council. The funds at the disposal of the Corporation are now very large, and require great prudence and judgment to expend them judiciously. For that reason I think Mr Barron’s business experience would make him a very useful member. I trust a large number of the electors will take the trouble to hear both sides before voting, because friendship should have nothing to do in deciding for the best man.—l am, &c., . A Ratepayer. Dunedin, August 4.
