Te-day the committee appointed reported ®li Taiaroa’s cla ms, that if the original intention to award the Natives one-tenth is fulfilled, they will be entitled to 240 properties, consisting of 60 town acres, 2,400 acres of suburban lands, and 12,000 acres of rural—--14,640 in all, representing a total value of L 29.920. To this should be added thirty years’ interest, to be calculated on the basis of a fair rental for the laud according to its real value.
A breach of privilege case is likely to troublo the House this afteruooa, owing to Mr Luckie’a forwarding to the ‘ Southern Cross ’ a report of the proceedings in the WardChapman Committee. Mr Vogel brought down a further amendment re the Licensing Bdl, providing that renewals are to be granted as a matter of coarse, unless the Court is satisfied that the management of the house is unsatisfactory or the accommodation insufficient, or that the applicant has committed a breach of the Act or Ordinance rendering a license forfeit able. The Court is empowered to take notice of any matter of objection, although no notice has been given; power to adjourn being given in such cases. All licenses granted are to be deemed under the Provincial Ordinance in force.
The report on excsa duties was brought up. They report that to immediately adopt the proposal of the Government is not consistent with good faith. It is inexpedient to stop distillation altogether, but in view of the loss of revenue resulting therefrom, and as the parties engaged express their willingness to aec-pt compensation, the Government should endeavor to arrange with them on equitable terms.
