EDUCATION BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held this morning (adjourned from yesterday) ; present—His Honor the DeputySuperintendent, Messrs M‘Kellar, Stout, Turnbull, and Hislop (Secretary). TUAPEKA FLAT. A memorial from residents in this district was read, asking that a school be established there, owing to the large number of children, and the nearest school being four miles away. Referred to the Lawrence School Committee. HIGH SCHOOL Mr Hawthorne, Hector of the High School, wrote stating that Mr Penney, English master, had intimated his intention of resigning after the present quarter. Referred to the High School Board of Advice, their report to be dealt with by tho Executive. sawyer’s bay. Mr M‘Dermid appeared in support of an application by the residents to have this school constituted a main district school in stead of, as at present, a side school. The application was declined, on account of the proximity of the scho 1 to the Grammar school at Port Chalmers. MERTON. An application by the School Committee to be allowed to purchase two additional acres for school purposes was agreed to. Anderson’s bay. An application for appointment of a schoolmistress was sanctioned. BIVERTON. An application for an additional pupil teacher was granted. TOITOIS, A memorial was read from the residents, asking to be declared a school district. Agreed to grant temporary aid, under the sub-section, amounting to JLfiO per year. KAKANUI. Application for the sum of L 25, as salary for a sewing mistres*, was sanctioned. REPAIRS, Two-thirds payments for repairs were granted to the following districts :—Cardrona, Kaikorai, and Waikouaiti. TOKOMAIEIRO. An application tor an under-schoolmaster was sanctioned—at a salary of L 75. IDA VALLEY. Applied to be constituted a school district, at L6O per am-uni. Granted under the temporary aids clause. UNCERTIFICATED TEACHERS. Some difficulty having arisen as to the appointment of a pupil-teacher for one of the district schools, the Board declined to accept the appointment, and passed the following resolution as a warning to the school committees: “That the attention of school committees be directed to section 19 of the Education Ordinance, 1864, and to the Board’s Regulation of February ;9. 1872 ; and that committees he informed that any appointment by any school committee of a certificated teacher cannot be recognised as valid, unless such appointment has been made by leave of the Board, previously obtained, as provided by section 19 of the Ordinance above referred to.”
