Wellington, July 28. An official inquiry into the circumstances i e . c °lhsion between the Manawatu and the brigantine Kate Brain was held to-day. ihe evidence was mainly to the effect that each vessel had done its utmost to avoid a collision.

The accused was formerly a surgeon in the Anned Constabulary. -

Lyttelton, July 29. The immigrants who arrived by the Northampton, on June Gth, were released yesterday from the quarantine station, except a few invalids and their attendants.

Christchurch, July 29. A bunclay Observance League, with a very influential committee, has been formed, with the object of agitating for preserving the sanctity of the Sabbath, including the closing of public institutions on that day.
