PORT CHALMERS MAYORALTY.
The nomination of candidates for the office of Mayor of Port Chalmers for the ensuing year took place at the Town Hall, at noon to-day, there being about twenty of the ratepayers present. After the Mayor (Mr Uermid) had read the sections of the Ordinance, the following nominations were read by the Town Clerk ;
o Mr Andrew M‘Kinnon : Proposed by Mr G. I-. Asher, and seconded by Mr Robert Borton.
Mr William Innis : Proposed by Mr John Thomson, and seconded by Mr John Jackson.
There being more than one candidate, all proceedings weie adjourned until the 21st inst.
Mr M'Kinnon stated that he came before them as a candidate for the office of Mayor for the ensuing year, which he considered he had a right to do, as last year there was a walk over for the office. He had been in the Council for live years ; but would not detain them now, as he intended to address a meeting, when h e would state his views. In answer to Mr Mason, he said that, in the event of his being returned, he would expect to sit on the Bench as magistrate. Mr Innes said he intended to explain his views at a meeting, and therefore ho would not detain the ratepayers, knowing they were working men. He would remind them that he was one of the senior councillors, and he considered he had a right to contest the election Mr Mason then put the same question as to the other candidate, when Mr Innes replied that he had no ambition in that way, considering there were enough J. P.’s already, but that, if asked, he had no objection.
After a vote of thanks to the Chairman, the meeting dispersed.
