Auckland, July 8. The schooner Papua has arrived from Rarotonga. Her master reports the total wreck of the schooner Tanner at the Islands.
The schooner Herald has arrived from Fiji, and brings news to June 28, but it is unimportant. The Government troops achieved another victory over the mountaineers of Viti Levu. Eighty of the enemy were killed.

Wellington, July 9. # Five publicans were fined L 5 each this morning for selling liquor on Sunday. The ‘ Post’s ’ assertion that Mr Thos. Russell is likely to be called to the Council, as a reward for his services in connection with the mail services, is correct! but the giving him the portfolio of the Postmaster' General is problematical.
Invercargill, July 9. The Invercargill Waste Land Board have postponed the consideration of Mr Brown’s application for a saw-mill license at Winton Bush to to-morrow.
