THOSE PUMPS.

To the Editor,

biK, —The City Council evidently mistake the mouths of the Duuedinites for lead-pots, by erecting things supposed to be pumps, which are anything but nice looking; on the contrary, they are enough to [frighten the weaker sex, especially at night-time, and they have already done so. Suspended to these pumps are things that a person in absence ,of mind would take for leadladdlea; they have got handies about 6m. long and a bowl at the end, out of which the parched traveller has to drink. Now 1 tuinkit would be advisable for the Council to put these things out of the way, and put cups of some sort in their place.—l am, &c., C.L. Dunedin, June 24. MR JOHNSTON EXPLAINS, To the Editor. Your local in last night’s issue, in which my name is mentioned, is wholly incorrect, bo far from pressing a question which a lady objected to answer. I did not ask a question at all, I simply objected to Mr Joyce wasting time in putting a question winch I considered clearly irrelevant; and his Worship sustained my objection.— I am. ' Wm. Johnston. Dunedin, June 26.
