WASTE LAND BOARD.

The usual weekly meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present—'The Chief Commissioner, Messrs Butterworth, Clarke, Strode, Reid, and Bastings. Mr Ezra Eldred represented that if the limber Regulations are adhered to he will be compelled to abandon his limekiln at Bobs Cove, Lake Wakatip. The Chief Commissioner read an abstruse calculation which he had gone into on the subject, by which it appeared that if applicant, were compelled to take out a license to cut timber the increase in expense of making his lime would be only one-third of a farthing per bushel. Regulations to be adhered to. 6 Con duct of auction sales in the districts round Clyde and JNaseby were opened, and, after discussion, referred to the Government. The tender of Mr G. Fache. for the former district, was at 2 per cent, all round, while tenders from two other auctioneers for the districts round Naseby were very much higher. Granted until Dec. 31, 1876 Mr Connell submitted that it would be to the advantage of the Province if larger leases than three years’ terms were granted, as with the short .leases every stick of timber would be cut; while if say a ten years’ lease were granted, only that timber would be cut which was actually fit, and the younger growth would be cultivated. The Board thought a loss of revenue would be incurred, as even if yhe timber were all cut, the land would be

still available ; and the Chief Commissioner remarked that at the rate at which the timber land was being cut and cleared, there was still a supply for the next two hundred years. Mr J. B, Bradshaw, for Mr W. H. Scheib, applied for a coal mining lease of 20 acres of laud between IN' evis and Arrow bluffs, on the south side of the Kawarau River. Morgan asked the Board if it intended to sell, or would give him a re-leasa of section 64, block 4, Oamaru, stating that he had had a lease of it for ten years pavt, and had spent over L4OO on it, and that it would be unfair for it to be sold to Mr Shrimski. It was decided that the laud be declared suburban land, so as to enable it to be cut up and sold—protection to be given to applicant’s interests. Mrs H. It was at first thought to grant a lease at the nominal rent mentioned, on condition that within a twelvemonth a certain amount of plant is on the ground, in terms of the application ; but, after discussion, the matter was adjourned for a week. Mr Walter Miller applied to purchase 348 acres of block 6, Waitahuna'Kast. Messrs Connell and Moodie supported the application, which Mr Bobert Dodds opposed, on tlie ground of his having previously applied for it. ihe application was received, except for the part applied for by Mr i/odds.
