THE QUEER’S ENGLISH.

To the Editor. StR, —In the interest of correct English it is to be hoped that the newspaper report of tli© prorogation speech, "by jbis Honor the; Superintendent of Otago is subject to cor rection. The speech reads, “Onbeba-f of the Governor, on the 14th day of May last, I assented to the Imprest Supply Ordinance, 1874.’' The intention no doubt is, “I assented on the 14th day of May last,” and has hot in view the particular Governor on the 14th day of May. Divested of ambiguity, the sentence should read, “On behalf of the Governor, I assented on the 14th day of May last to the Imprest Supply Ordinance, 1874.”—1 am, &c., .Alpha. Dunedin, June 16.
