The great consumption of paper in the Colony is very remarkable. The Customs returns for the year 1872 show the impoxted value to be the large sum of 1.83,382. Much of this money would be saved to the Colony xu the establishment of Paper Mills, giving employment to many, and utilising the waste products and the natural grasses especially adapted for paper-making which so largely abound in Otago. It is therefore proposed to form a Company for the manufacture of paper on a moderate scale at first, but which may afterwards be easily extended. An arrangement has been entered into with Mr M‘Glashan—who has for years devoted much attention to the subject— to acquire from him several important concessions in connection with the Government Bonuses, amounting to L4.G00, and also the valuable site for the mills he has acquired at the IVi ataura Falls, for which he will accept 200 paid-up shares of the Company. The proposed site for the mills has many advantages. The immense water-power in point of economy for the driving of the machinery will be very great. The land consists of 25 acres, and adjoins a coal reserve, aud coal is seen on the property itself. The main line of railway from the Bluff to Dunedin runs through it, and a station adjoins it. The raw material which will principally be made use of in the manufacture is in great abundance in the surrounding districts. Survey and levels of the mill site and race have been taken by Mr Brim ton, 0 E., ami plans and estimate* of machinery have been procured from Britain. The services of a thoroughly practical paper-maker have been secured, who will also take an interest in shares of the Company. The material to be used has been tested by paper-makers, both in England and the neighboring Colonies. The Directors, after careful inquiry in England and elsewhere, and from estimates they have received, have satisfied themselves that the capital of the Company is amply sufficient for the establishment of a mill for the manufacture of at least 500 tons of paper annually, and from the rate at which paper is now sold they have little doubt that the returns would enable them to declare a very handsome dividend annually. Nearly one-half of the shares are already taken up, and the balance are now offered to the public. As it is desirable to commence operations as early as possible, application for shares should be at once sent in to Mr Bradshaw, Dunedin (in whose office will be seen specimens and plans), and Mr Calder, Invercargill. A meeting of Shareholders will be called for the election of Directors, immediately after the establishment of the Company. OTAGO TURKISH BATHS COMPANY (Limited).
