The creditors of an absconding Yankee banker _ found, on opening his safe, that the only thing he had left for a rainy day was his umbrella. A noted hunter of South Hero fears that he has been the victim of a “sell,” He has a gun that scatters shot badly, so that it is not much account. A while ago he saw an advertisement in a city paper offering to send information whereby such “ scattering” of shot could be effectually prevented, on receipt of 50 cents. He sent the money, aud in due time was informed that to prevent his gun from “scattering” he should “put in only one shot.” A despatch has been received from Waimate, Bay of Islands, with particulars of a dispute amongst the Natives there which is likely to lead to open hostilities. It appears that a party of Maoris had been digging gum on a piece of tetpued land near Haikhoe, on the Hokianga side of the Waimate, and had collected between thirty and forty tons, when Mohi Tawhiao, the leading fightmg chief, with his party, objected to the removal of the gum, on the ground that the land was tapu, and claimed it for himself. The two factions ranged themselves in hostile bands, mustering from 150 to 180 a side. The Natives who had dug the gum were wdl armed, and remained to protect it, and erected a pah on the field. Mohi and his party went over to the property of the gum-diggers and commenced an onslaught on their potatoes, pigs, and sheep, on which they have been living for more than a week. Mohi has also built a pah. The Natives protecting the gum are now getting short of food, and Mohi has determined to starve them out. Shooting was expected to have commenced between the contending factions yesterday (Fri- i day). All Europeans were ordered by Mohi not to touch the gum. • Late Advertisements.
