THE MELBOURNE CUP, 1875.
The entries for the Melbourne Cup and Maribyrnong Plate were posted on the evening of June 1. During the day the wagering had been in favor of 80 nominations against 70, the result showing that they only wanted one of the former number, Uf this number a little over a score are from New South Wales, a few from Adelaide, the moat belonging to Victorian soil, there are 54 in the Maribyrnong Plate, 18 of which come from Sydney. Then there are 43 in the New Year’s 'I wo-year-old Stake, 52 in the Ascot Vale, 100 in the Victorian Derby of 1875, 37 in the Oaks, 85 in the St. Leger of 1876, 84 in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, 98 in the Mares’ Produce Stakes, and 255 in the Mares’ Produce Stakes of 1877. On the whole, there is a splendid entry, the 100 nominations for the Victoria Derby being a great increase on any former entry for that stake. The names of the Cup entries are : Haricot, R'ry O’More, Stockbridge, Maid of Ayenal, Friendless, Jockey, Dagworth, Horatio, Gladstone, A.F., Electricity, May Day, Prince, The Ace, After Dark, Here Goes, The Diver (late Dolphin), Meuindie, Lapidist, Gloom, Ellis, Champagne, King Tom, Blue feter The Hook, Sir Bedwere, Bliukb nnie, May King, Early Morn, Sunlight, Break of Day, Bright Light, Misty Morn, Lurline, Calumny, Papapa, Wainui, Benjiroo, Imperial, Paris, Romeo, Mountaineer, Cleolite, Goshawk, King Billy, Kettledrum, Strop, Oalaba, Protos, Fugleman, King of the Ring, heaspray, Triton, Banco, Excelsior, Conqueror, The Prophet, Lord Lyon, Viva, Llama, Goldabrough, The Arrow, Rose d Amour, The Novice, Nevvhold, Queen of Clubs, Womho, Beltran, All Fours, Neredah, Zetland, Speculation, Fitzyattendon, Nyren, Jayelin, Burwood, Ace of Trumps, and Echo. ’
