An experiment in sheep farming is being made in the [southern part of Westland. Messrs Ward and Douglas lately drove 400 sheep into the Paringa river, losing forty in i one of the rivers on the way. A new steam fire engine has been recently purchased by the Corporation of Kaiapoi at a cost of L 590. On the first trial steam was got up in minutes, and water discharged from three “branches” at the rate of 2CO gallons a minnte. “Times,’ in the' ‘Napier Telegraph,’ directs attention to the fact that the following offices are held by one gentleman : Registration and Returning Officer, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Immigration Commissioner, Harbor Master, Eesident Magistrate, Napier; Resident Magistrate, Waipawa ; Resident Magistrate, Havelock ; He exclaims, “Here is a wondrous heptarchy ! Is it possible that any gentleman, however gifted, can by any industry, satisfactorily fulfil the variety of duties of these offices ?”
