Wilmhnrst, an appeal from a conviction obtained at Canterbury against appellant, the surgeon of the ship Isles of the South, charged with stealing medical stores, Mr Travers argued the case for appellant, contending that min, appreciation of medical comforts hr a surgeon of a ship could not amount to larceny as a bailee, but simply breach of trust.. The Chief Justice said the Court would not trouble Mr Allan, for the Crown, ta reply. , The conviction was. therefore, affirmed. The passengers by the Golden Sea are taking proceedings against the captain for an insufficient supply of water during the voyage. May 23. The Resident Magistrate dismissed the case of the Kaiwarra tollkeepar v. Young, the mail coach contractor, on the ground that a mail coach was not liable to pay tolls. The case will now be brought before the Supreme Court. In the General Synod a committee has been appointed to inquire into 1 the action ef the Standing Committee of the diocese of Auckland, in refusing to take fire risks outside ofthat diocese. In reply to Archdeacon Stock, the President stated that no obstacle now exists to the winding up of the Life Insurance Fund. A Bill was introduced and read, first time, for qualifying any layman twenty-one years of age and-two months a member ef the Churchy to take part in church meetings. On the motion of the Bishop of Dunedin, it was resolved that, a closer intipaacy should be cultivated between the branches of the Church of England in Now Zealand and Australia.
