Saturday, May 22. (Before H. S. Fish, Esq ,‘and J, Black, Esq., • J.P.’s.)

Drunkenness. —Cornelius Curry for this offence was fined ss. with the option of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Forging a _ Cheque. —John Morrison, whose exploits in this Province during the past eouple of months have gained him considerable notoriety, was charged on the information of William Oliver with uttering a forged cheque of the value of L 9 10s. Prisoner was not defended, —Sub-Inspector' Mallard conducted the prosecution, for which evidence was given as follows William Wilson Oliver Said he was barman for H&tmah Hall, who keeps the York Hotel. On Saturday, April 25, the prisoner was in Mrs Hall’s .house. The cheque produced witness received from him on that day. It purported to be drawn by W. L. Simpson on the National Bank, in favor of James Russell, and was for tha sum of L 9 10s. When presenting the aheque prisoner made the remark that he was due Mrs Hall a few shillings, and if witness would cash the cheque he would pay the amount.—Mrs Hall deposed to cashing the cheque.— James E. Brown, ledger-keeper at the National Bank, said the cheque referred to was paid into the bank to the credit of James Finch and Co. .No person of the name of W. L. Simpson has an account in that bank. 1 —Detective Shury said he knew Mr W. JL Simpson, who is Warden and Resident Magistrate at Clyde. Also knew his handwriting, and the way in which he signs hia name. Witness produced a document which he saw that gentleman write and sign. Compared the signature with that on the cheque, which is not the signature of Mr Simpson. —Sub-I*spector Mallard : On that evidence I would ask for a remand till Saturday next. There are several other eases against prisoner which will take at least a week to get n P —The remand was accordingly granted, bail not being applied for.
