Friday, May 15. Petitions were presented as follows ;■ From 219 residents in the Waikouaiti distriot, against-Sunday traffic on railways (Mr M‘Eenzie). —From George Daniels, late warder in the Dunedin Hospital, praying that his case may be taken into consideration (Mr Fish).—From 305 residents of Port Chalmers, against Sunday traffic (Mr M'Dermid).—From 28 residents at Hyde, praying that an additional block of land for settlement be set aside, contiguous to that already given (Mr De Latour). . QUESTIONS. In answer to questions, the Government said (1) that steps were taken by the late Government to re-purchase from Captain Logan a portion of his freehold known to'be payably auriferous; but it was found that they could not ' See their way clear to pay the sum required for the privilege, and the matter had therefore dropped. (2). It was not intended this session to take any action with regard to the Education Ordinance in n-,, r . aa relates to the reading of the Bible in schools receiving State aid. He (the Provincial Secretary) had a lively recollection of moving in the matter two or three years, ago, and the result had made mm sufficiently chary of taking action with respect to the Ordinance in future * £H l PrOVICIMi Secretary laid on the table the report of proceedings of , the University of Otago for the year ending March The Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Act. 1873, Introduction' Bill was read a third time, and passed. The Roads Diversion Bill was read a third time, and passed. Bo (Mi Fish) h.d only asked an explanation of a slight inconsistency, and was not aware iha the inconsistency existed only in hia owi obtuseness. The Provincial Bec.,etary replied, and the motion was carried.
