(^NENTLEMEN, —As my term of office as M Mayor of the City draws near completion, 1 feel it ray duty thus early to allay much misconception existing in the minds of the electors as to my future movements with regard to that office. For some time past two of your Councillors have declared their intention of contesting the civic chair gentlemen well deserving of your support through long servitude. I feel, therefore, it would be placing these gentlemen at some disadvantage, as well as trealing my many friends and supporters slightingly, were I to continue longer in avowing my non-intention of offering myself for re-election. It will be in your rememberance that I distinctly stated when soliciting your suffrages for the honor last year, that I gave it as my opinion the office should be a rolling one. This I still adhere to, notwithstanding that I have lately, over and over again, been urgently pressed to allow myself to be placed in nomination for another year at least, which in itself I recognize as no small honor ; and that my services (however far apart they may have been) have at least to some extent given satisfaction, '.D* is not my intention, however, if possible, to isolate myself entirely from Municipalj affairs should it be the desire of the ratepayers. You .are aware this year an additional Councillor will have to be selected from your midst in each Ward. I will therefore place my services at the disposal of my old constituents in High Ward, assuring them that if they do me the honor to again return me to the Council Chamber, I shall continue to exercise that ever watchful care over their interests as well as the city generally it has been my wont to do in previous years. On vacating the chair, 1 shall long cherish with grateful remembrance the high compliment it has been my lot to receive at your hands, and I trust I shall long continue to merit the confidence so largely reposed in I have the honor to remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, L t „ A.
