THE DUNEDIN HOSPITAL.

To the Editor. Slß,—ln the Provincial Council on the 13th current it was stated by the Government that the hospital was open to the profession, Government then explained what was meant by its being opened, viz., medical men might, by asking, obtain permission to be present during the performance of an operation ! But this is not what the profession nor people mean by its being thrown open. They mean that ah efficient staff of visiting physicians and surgeons be appointed. The wards should be divided amongst a certain number of physicians and surgeons, each having his own ward or wards. In addition there ought to be a resident house-surgeon, and a resident house-physician. Two or more medical men could be appointed to attend the hospital on their respective days, for the purpose of giving advice to the outdoor patients. One or more apothecaries would also be necessary additions to the staff. 'l he medical officers might be elected for a certain term of years by the people, under the guidance of an out-door committee of management. The present building is, bye-the-bye, only an apology for an hospital. There is not a proper system of ventilation, nor sufficient accommodation, nor an adequate supply of hospital material. How long will the people of Dunedin submit to a state of things such as this I—I am, &c., Geo, W. Coie, Dunedin, May 14.
