HORTICULTURE IN OTAGO.

To the Editor. am glad to see, from a letter that appeared in your columns on Saturday last that amateurs are beginning to inquire for themselves as to the working of the Horticultural Society, which has been retrograding for some time past. From the tone of the meeting held in the Athenaeum, the gardeners seem to desire to lead and conduct the affairs of the Society. Now, sir, seeing that the gardeners on the previous committee took such a small share in carrying out the arrangements at the different shows (in fact, the work—which was no trifle—was thrown on the shoulders of two orthree amateurs); and also that almost the entire amount of the funds is contributed by amateurs, I hardly think it right that the work of conducting the business of the Society should be handed over to them. I. entirely agree with “ Amateur” that a Society, founded somewhat en the principles laid down by him should be formed immediately, and a public meeting called by those interested to carry out the preliminary arrangements.—l am, &c,, _ Another Amateur. Dunedin, May 12.
