Commercial.

A fair business was done in the general market during the week. Cartage, if not lower, is at any rate more readily procurable, as a greater number of teams are offering. The news received via Melbourne of the destruction of canes in the Mauritius by a hurricane, and of the consequent advance in prices had a similar effect in Dunedin, and sugar now commands an advance of about 20s a ton. The demand is good. In spirits no alteration can be quoted, although Heneasy’s brandy is held firmly at last week’s quotations, and commands 9s 9d; case, 31s. Geneva is in short supply, and JDKZ commands 14s. Ale and porter are unchanged. The stock of kerosene has been much reduced. Devoe’s is now worth 2s Id in bond, and other brands in proportion. Colonial produce continues to advance. Prime cheese is now fetching 7sd to Bd, and butter la Id to Is 2d. Candles are in better supply, but prices are unchanged. The demand is very heavy. • SHARE MARKET. Mr Hooper reports the share market dull this week. National Insurance have made a slight advance ; present price, 34s to 355, with an upward tendency. Standard Insurance have slightly dropped; present prices, 16s, not eagerly in demand. Shotbver Terrace, Us 6d. National Bank have dropped; present price, L39s6d. The new bank just started finds great favor, and is likely to be a great success.
