Nelson, April 30.; At the races to-day the Nelson Cup of 75 sovs, two miles, with weight for age, was won by Eakapo, Yatterina being second. It was a capital race. The Handicap of 40 sovs, one and a-half miles, was won by Kakapo, Yatterina being second, and Calumny third. Calumny won the Consolation Stakes. May 1. A cottage at Wakefield was destroyed by fire this morning, and Mrs Wright, the sole occupier, burnt to death. . Wellington, April 30. The Provincial Council was opened to-day. The Superintendent gave a long address, reviewing the administration of the affairs of the Province during the past year in detail, and briefly since his advent to office. He said that the estimated ordinary revenue for the year ™ L 18,700,. whUe the actual was L 24,966. The estimated territorial revenue was L 45,000 ; actual, L 57,997. He condemned the action of the General Government regarding the dis- ' mv&alofthe ProvfiapTM Auditor, And locking up the Treasury, as qnojjdled-for and cruel.. Among the estimates is the item L 3.000, for the discovery of goldfields. In concluding, he said the Provincial Government had decided to confine its applications for .borrowing this year within the most moderate limits. Contingent estimates would be sent down, limited to the amount qf the reduced loan, namely, L 60,000. The tenders accepted were the Colonial Trust Fund, L 40.000 at 101$, and LIO.OOO at 102. Declined the Mayor of Christchurch’s tender, L3OO at par. This is lower than the 'last -sale in London.
