THE CITY ELECTION.
DECLARATION OF THE POLL.
The official declaration of the poll, giving the result of the recent election, was made at half-past four o’clock on Saturday afternoon, outside the Provincial Government Buildings. Mr Street, the' Returning Officer, declared the official numbers to be as follows: -Wales, 629 ; Barton, 541; Grant, 39. He therefore declared Mr Wales to be a duly elected member of the House of Representatives for the City of Dunedin. Mr Wales, in thanking the electors, reiterated his intention to carry out the promises he had made on the hustings, and at his meetings. His views he recapitulated, so that there might be no mistake at any
future time as te the opinions he had expressed, and as to what he had bound himself to. First, he had promised to support a measure enabling the Corporation and City Council to construct waterworks of their own, provided they cannot come *to terms with the Waterworks Company to purchase their works at the price of Ll6 per share; secondly, to inquire into the working of the immigration system, and use his endeavors to rectify the blunders committed by the agency system, and to encourage the free
nomination system; thirdly, he had promised, or rather he was in favor of a liberal land law—even a more liberal land law than we have at present. He wished to see the means of taking up land on deferred payments extended, as he had explained at hia several meetings. He had also promised to support a Permissive BUI, manhood suffrage, secular education—free and compulsory. In answer to questions, Mr Wales said he had already promised to support the Corporation Bill in the event of the Water Company not coming to terms at Ll6 per sham de meant te oppose the company’s demands unless they sold at Ll6 per share. He would also oppose the giving of increased powers to the company. The company, as honorable men, were bound to sell to the Corporation at LI 6 per share ; they were morally bound to do so.
, Mr Barton was not present; Mr Grant spoke. ■ ■ ■ :
