WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of this Board was held to day. Present—The Chief Commiasioner, Messrs Butterworth, and Strode. Mr Charles Hill complained to the Board that Mr A. Frazer had taken possession of the bush area at Waikara, applied for and marked out by him. It was agreed to postpone the matter for a week. Mr Doughty appeared for Mr Frajcer. J The application of Messrs Connell and Moodxe, on behalf of Messrs C. and G. Thornhill, to have the time for the payment l 'f purchase money for the pre-emptive on run 25, extended until June 1, was considered, and one month’s extension granted. Mr A. Jones applied to purchase the land between block 25, Hawkesbury, and the lagoon. The Board agreed that a license might be granted under the ICOth clause, at LI per annum.
Messrs Orbell and Miller’s application tor their pre-emptive right for their run 171, to' be approved of, was granted. The application of Mr Bradshaw, on behalf of Mr Ralph Allan, for protection to prospect for coal on sections 12,14, and 16, block 7, was postponed. Mr W. Frazer applied to purchase 80 acres on run 335, at 10s per acre, in exercise of his pre emptive right in terms of clause 82 of the Regulations of 1856, clause 3 of the Otago Waste Lands Act, 1866. and clause 4 of the Otago Waste Lauds Act, 1872. The matter was postponed for legal advice. Objections by the Bruce Lime and Coal Company to the sale of a part of section 33, block 1, Akatore, until the line of railway was surveyed to their pit, were read. The Board decided that the land comprising the supposed line of road might be competed for, and the whole of the section to be sold by auction.
tci ß n e ii lon holders of business licenses at fct. Bathans, that the upset price of sections there be reduced to L 5, was read, and the petition refused. The report of Ranger Hughan on the objections of the Tapanui Progress Committee to the leasing of the Coal Reserve on block 7, Glenkenicb, was read. The objections were to leasing the whole, but not to 10 or 20 acres being granted. The suggestions were approved of. Mr Strode brought under the notice of the Board that a coal seam was being burned at Coal Creek, near Teviot. He said it was a shameful destruction of the most valuable public property, and had been burning for t“" last four or five years. The Chief Commxssioner also made reference to the matter, and said it was time steps were taken to prevent such wholesale destruction. The Governmeut were recommended to hare an adjacent water-taae turned on to it.
