ANNUAL LICENSING MEETING.

A< Richmond, Dandas and Leith streets.—Mr Cook appeared to support the application, and Mr Stewart to oppose it on beivr rt “ a ß° aQ d a number of other persons.— Mr Cook produced a memorial signed by sixtvtwo adult residents in the neighborhood, in favor of the granting of the license. He also produced a memorial signed by twelve respectable residents to the effect that they had not observed any increase of intemperance in the neighborhood since the house was opened.— Mr Stewart said that the opposition was by a large number of persons who had from the first opposed the granting of a license for this hotel. They contended that the license was unnecessary, and that since the opening of the house intemperance had greatly increased in the neighborhood. Persons had been supplied with drink at this hotel on Sunday : and there were two other hotels within a distance of 350 yards.—The Rev. R. L. Stanford deposed tnat in his opinion a hotel was not necessary there, and since it had been opened he had seen more intoxicated men about the streets in the vicinity. He did not object tohotels.-J. W. Jago deposed that a number of those who had signed the memorial m favor of granting the license resided some blocks off. During the last four months he had seen more intoxication in the neighborhood than he saw for the previous He « ha 4 86911 JP 80 ? 1 ® 6® in an out of the hotel on Sunday. In hia opinion, the hotel was neither desirable nor necessary. If their Worships had heard the blackguarding he got within the precincts of the Court tie day before, they would not be surprised that many people did not apj 9PP° se the granting of licenses, tie bad no personal feeling against Mr Richmond. If a license was to be granted for the house, he would sooner Mr Richmond should have it than a great many publicans in Dunedin. —The case was adjourned till Wednesday next, to give Mr Cook an opportunity of producing rebutting evidence.
During tha sitting of the Resident Magistrate’s Court this meming, Mr Harris said that he intended on Wednesday next to apply to have the case of air Allen, of the City Buffet whose license had been taken awav re-ponoi* dered. The Bench had determined to refuse the application, but he was instructed to state that he would be prepared to offer evidence which would probably cause them to alter their opinion, and place this case in the same category as one which Mr Stout had mentioned ilßen did not think any opposition would be offered to his application, amf was oonsTauentlv not prepared with his defence. q
