FIRE.

A fire broke out at about half-past eight this morning in a building in Cumberland street, just opposite the Distillery. Th-rc are five tenements to the one building, and the fire originated in the centre one, occupied by a carter named James Forester. Mrs Forester states that after her husband had gone to work she lit a fire under, a washing boiler in the kitchen, and having occasion to send one of her children out, she left the room for a few minutes. On her return the room was Jfull of smoke, and no one oould enter. She imagines that a spark from the

flro must have ignited the clothes lying about ready about to be washed. The whole interior of their house was destroyed, and nothing was saved. Their loss they estimate at over L2OO, having lost L2O in cash, but they were insured in the Norwich Union office forLIOO. Thefourother families suffered damage to their furniture and clothes by removal, and of these—Messrs Samuel Strong, John iley Strong, 8. Morrison, and Bowers—only was insured, also for LIOO, in the Norwich Union. The whole buildings belong to vlr W. H. Cutten, whose lease expires in about two months’ time, and who recently affected an insurance in the Norwich Union for L3OO for two months. The fire brigade v ere quickly on the spot and at work, soon patting a stop to what would have been a very extensive conflagration, Messrs Gibbs and Clayton’s timber yard being in the immediate vicinity. The men employed at the Distillery rendered great service by keeping the fire down with the establishment’s hose until the arrival of the Brigade. .
