YORK PLACE CONTRACT.

To the Editor. Sir, —1 beg, through your columns, to call the attention of our City Council to the disgraceful state of Albert street, York JPlace, *c., especially during wet weather, such as we have had during the last few days. Ido not say that any of our City Councillors are to blame for the neglect of flrhich I am complaining, but I think, at the same time, that they should see that things are done properly. In fact, lam informed there is a clause in the York Place contract that the contractor is, during the formation of the streets, bound to maintain temporary footpaths in order that people may get to their residences. Is this part of the contract being carried out 7 No, not in the least. Although there are heaps of broken metal lying about, no attempt is made to lay it down in order to form temporary footpaths, so that people paay be enabled to get along without being bogged in the mire. It is pitiful to see the children for the District School and the “ young ladies” for the High School wadinr through the sea of mud across York place in order to reach school. It is all very well for men to go across, because they can pick their way pretty well and avoid the worst places. If the City Council intends to let the street remain as it is for some time to come, I would recommend that it furnish the inhabitants in that locality with a number of stilts to enable them to get through the mud.—l am, &0., C. S, Chapman. Dunedin, April 17,
