THE OTAGO BOWING CLUB.

To the Editor. SlU,—! sea by the papers that a meeting of a club bearing the above name has been held lately in the Criterion Hotel. Can you inform me what this club is and of whom it consists ? The only Rowing Club which I am acquainted with is one which is limited to thirty members and has an entrance fee of six guineas. If this is the Otago Rowing Club, surely thename is inappropriate. The club is, I understand, composed of a select few, and many rowing men in Dunedin who would be glad to join are prohibited from doing so by the fact that though the club

purports to be a kind of public institution, yet the exorbitant entrance fee and selectness of its members prevent them from trying to obtain membership. Why is the club not made a more general one T An entrance fee of a guinea is surely enough to pay, and if the present members are unwilling to allow the boats to belong to such a qlub, the ownership of the boats might still remain in the present members, while a subscription of a guinea a year might be given for the use of the boats. There is pot half the proper amount of work taken out of the boats | they are lying doing nothing in the shed nearly every night in the when they might be employed, if only the club were thrown more open. Perhaps, if this suggestion were carried out, the club would be entitled to the name it bears ; at present it is a delusion and a snare.—l am. &0., Neptune. Dunedin, April 15,
