Mr Mackay and Colonel Lyon met Rewi yesterciay at Kopua, Mr Mackay allowed no civilians to be present. At Reefton the Buffer River rose thirty feat in twelve hours, but no damage of importance was done. ■mt tw 1 , . Auckland, April 11. Mr Winkle, engineer of the s.s. Murray, has tested the coal from Whangarei from the more mtely opened seam, and reports it equal to the °t Islands coal. It burns more fiercely and with a clearer flame, and makes less smoke! He believes the Whangarei coal will be found equal to any in New Zealand. Minnie Garlick, a Woodlark immigrant, charged with infanticide, was found guilty of concealment of birth only, and sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment, „ , Gretmouth, April 11. • A here , wa3 a fearf ul flood here on Sunday night and Monday last. It rained incessantly for forty hours. The whole town was inundated. The stone protection work stood severe tests, and saved the town from utter destruction. It was the highest flood yet known in Greymouth. The residents in the lower part of the town were removed to places of safety. Several cottages were swept to sea. There were no other losses in the town, expppt garden fences &c. Several land- slips took place in the Grey Valley Hoad. Severe' damage was done to the road and railway works. Disastrous news is anticipated from the Grey Valley. The flood has subsided, „ _ . Westport, 'April 11. m , ileav yfl°°ds occurred yesterday and to-day. Ihe Cpbden street wharf was carried away, and two ferry punts were carried over the bar. Four or five acres of the Coal Quay Reserve were washed away. Several small houses were puffed down and removed. The flood is now subsiding. The pile bridge near Charleston was destroyed on Sunday. on. . , New Plymouth, April 11. The agent of the N.Z.S. Company received notice that no more cargo would be brought by the steamers of the company. The ‘ Herald’ says this is a foolish act, as the Southern, merchants will be the sufferers. The store-keepers here will then remove their trade to Auckland, where other steamers are obtainable.
