.Riverton,.— -The census taken on the Ist March showed the population 7 of Orepuki tobe 344 souls.—About 35 men are actively 1 employed sluicing at the Bound Hill. Thu-' returns are from L 3 to L2O per week per man.—By last mail Mr T. Daniel, M. P. 0. ,; i,ha immigration agent for the Western District despatched nominations for 6§ adult* —all agriculturists and ' shepherda.— The •ommencement of the game season on the Ist instant was not hailed with any feelings of delight among the sportsmen of the : Wes torn district. In this favored region we live beyond the pale of the law, ,-eo far as the Game * are concerned, and when the residents want to go [ sho6.ting they don’t, trouble themselves whether it is the “open’ or “ close ” season.—The spirit of enterprise 5 is not dead, in New Zealand yet. We under stand that the spirited owner ef a wellknown whaling craft intends next summer to proceed to Kerguelen’s land, an island dtuated half-way between Africa and Australia, in latitude 50. The island is de scribed as abounding with seals, and capable of grazing 100,000 sheep. The gentleman >vho is undertaking this speculation is a whaler of the “ good old times.” For a lon, time past the advisability of forming a company to purchase a small steamer for the port of fiiverton has been discussed by the citizens.—‘Star.’
Tuapeka.—The local medico at Eoxbnrgb was made the unfortunate victim of a muai heartless hoax on the first of April. t ! ome' kind friend appears to have furnished with a telegram purporting to be sent to him by Mrl Maoandrew from Clyde,, stating that, in; company with, Mr Bantings, he would be at < irmond’s Hotel, Koxburgh, that evening at, 7 o’clock, and inviting the doctor to dine with them, and also expressing a hope that they would not:be bothered with any dtpu-’ tations. The doctor, evidently flattered with such enviable and marked distinction was not slow in apprising his friends of hi • good fortune; but 7 o’clock arriving and no, Superintendent or Goldfields (Secretary putting in an appearance, our friend, who had, got himself up for the occasion was re- 1 luctantly compelled to' admit that he had 1 been made an April fool of.—Applications for the 2,000 acre ;block of land open on the deferred payment system were received at the District Land Office yesterday. There were fourteen applications made during the day for land, covering an area of 1,992 acres; but owing to there being in a few cases several applicants for the same section, the quantity of land applied for on the block only extends over an area of 578 a 3r sp. The following are the sections applied for and the number of applicants :—Section 20, ten applicants ; section 21, ten applicants; section 24, seven applicants; section 17, four applicants ; section 27, • seven .applicants ; and one applicant for each of the following sections, viz 9, 10, 12, 16,22, 38, 39 and 40, The sections for which there are several applications, as might be expected, are the pick of, the block..—The quantity of gold lodged with the Receiver at Lawrence, to be sent to the Victorian Mint, during the past mor-th, and forwarded by esoort^yesterday, was 52o*s 11 dwts,—‘Times.’
Cromwell; Last week the Elizabeth Company washed up a crushing of 136 tons,’ with a result of i 62 ounces. This is very nearly at the rate of 1 oz. and 4 dwts. to the ton. The crushing lasted two weeks —lt is reported on good authority that the Heart of Ouk has struck the reef in the 100 feet level The manager, Mr Scott, says he is of opinion that it is the main reef which has been struck—The Star is'again crushing, though the stone is being raised at some disadvantage, on account of the lower tunnel not being completed.—The Young Australian is ? , U nrt r Bogan's battery. From 150 . tons will be put through before washmg up, 1 he Cromwell Co. washed up last week about 64 tons. The yield was 354 ounces, or at the rate of nearly 6£ ounces to the ton.—We have heard a good deal lately about the quantity of gold which was being turned out fr m the Nevis, but we did not know that such good finds had been made as we are now informed on good authority have been. One party above the NeHs township, we hear, is realising about L3O a week per man, there being four shareholders: and they have been doing that for about twelve months past. Another party have been doing still better, and have been for a still longer period. Prom all accounts we draw the conclusion that there is every prospect of the .Nevis being proved to contain many such claims, but that it will only pay men who have some capital to invest in preliminary works, and it is not a “poor
man s diggings,” as that phrase is generally understood.—The dividends declared by the Cromwell Quartz Company dtiring the year 1873 amounted, we aie informed by one of the shareholders, to very close upon LB.OUO. It will be rememheri d that a break-down took place in the crushing apparatus in the beginning of that period, and that crushing whs suspended consequently for so eral months.—A considerable number of miners from this district left last week en route for the Palmer goldfield. A good many more are preparing to go. We cannot pretend to know individually all who are going or have gone ; hut some of them we know must have great faith in the Palmer prospects, when they have left the claims upon which they were employed here. A few have prudently put wages men on in their place here, so that if the {-'aimer should turn out bad they may Ve able to return, also leaving some one staving behind authority to sell out for them in the event of the rush turning out well.— ‘Argus.’
