THE OPERA.
A Tiber’s charming opera, “Fra Diavolo,” Was presented last evening for the first time ibis season, and drew a good attendance in air parts of the house. ’> he, cast was—Fra Diavolo, Mr Hallam ; Lord Allcash, Mr "Vernon; Lorenzo, Mr Templeton; Beppo, Mr Kainford; Giacomo, MrLevison; Mntteo) Mr Lester; Lady Alloash, Miss Lambert; and Zerlina, Miss May. If we except a few Of the principals, there was not shown that thorough acquaintance with the music and libretto necessary to make the production thoroughly successful, Mr Templeton was particularly at fault: he appeared to know hardly half-a-dozen bars of the music allotted to Lorenzo, and still lees of the libretto ; while the few words he did speak were given in a sing-song style. -A greater part of the recitatives were cut out; but in every other respect the opera was given in its entirety. Miss May as Zerlina again appeared to great advantage, singing and- acting with her customary taste and finish. “On yonder rock” and “Oh joy”, were both admirably rendered. Mr Hallam was a very respectable Diavolo, sang well, and acted with more than ordinary spirit. His best effort was decidedly the grand and difficult sceha in the third act, beginning with 'Proudly and wide.” Tae •part of Lady Alloash is top much for Miss Lambert ; neither pan we say much for Mr Vernon’s “Milor.” But, on the other hand, Messrs. Kainford and Lovison are to. be ;complimented on the prominence they gave to the parts of the brigands. The first-mentioned gentleman has some opportunities for, displaying some good facial exS region, which he does not neglect to seize, ut it would have been better if he bad shown less inclination for burlesque business, •la the third act he introduced Shield's song of The Wolf, 1 which he sang splendidly, receiving a- merited,, encore The brilliam overture was capitally played by the orcbes tra. To night, is Mr Kainford’s benefit,. When “ The Bohemian Girl ” will be. repio duced.; to be followed by Offenbach’s trifle the “ Rose of Avergne. The latter is quite new to; ns, but judged by her Boulette, wr,; can understand the impression Miss Maj 1 appears to have made wherever she ha played Flenrette. As one of the hardest : working and most painstaking members ofi the' company,. Mr Kainford has particular maims for the support of the publie, and we i hope to see them rewarded by a full house.
