.. ~ „ Wellington. April 8. At the Supreme Court Criminal Sittings today, there were only five cases, of which three were for indecent assault. Four wero thrown out by the Grand Jury, and In the other case a Maon was charged with cutting and wounding, but was acquitted on the ground that it was done accidentally. The Council of the New Zealand University was formally opened to-day. A report was read, and several notices of motion was given. April 9. ihe barque Malay and the ketch Alert are agam afloat. The Government have taken over the Hutt Hallway. . Messrs Brogden have issued invitations for a grand ball at the Theatre on Tuesday next. Auckland, Aprils. The Inspector of Police denies the reported departure of Sullivan to Sydney. The wharf laborers have resolved to demand 10s per day of eight hours for discharging vessels. The Chief Justice, jin opening the criminal sessions, commented on the smallness of the calendar, and said it was not more than a quarter of the cases he had tried one session. _ . The second day’s races Were' more successful and satisfactory. The weather was fine, the spectators more numerous, and there were no accidents. The following are the results : The Handicap Hurdle Race—Banjo, 1; Maid of the Mill, 2, Hack Hurdle Race—Falcon, 1. Joying Handicap— Ringleader, 1; Border Lad, 2. The Novel Race was a walk over for Poor Boy. The Consolation Handicap was won by Mr Grant’s Morven, Mr R. Rule, of the * North Otago Times,’ is the chief sufferer by the coach capsizing yesterday. He is progressing favorably, although some bones ia the leg are broken. ______ Balclutha, April 8. At the races to-day the weather was fine, ffie attendance fair, and the racing good. The Hurdle Race was not run, as only two horses accepted. The Trotting Race was run over again to-day, and won by Snip. Ada colt won the Pubhcans’ Handicay; Nelly King the District Handicap.
