The barque Rose M. commenced to discharge her cargo from Calcutta into the railway trucks this morning. The s.s. Phoebe was taken into the Graving Dock this morning for the of being cleaned and painted. The schooner Spec sailed down from Dunedin this morning and went alongside the ship Wild Deer to take on board railway iron for Oamaru.
The recent voyage of the City of Melbourne is the fastest, on record from San.Francisco via Honolulu and Fiji. The passage from San Francisco to Auckland via Honolulu and Fiji, » distance of 6,112 miles, was performed in 22 steaming days, giving an average of 277 mfles per day, or Hi knots per hour; on some occasions the vessel made over 300 miles. The following is the passenger list by the s.s. Atrato, from London February 6For Canterbury and Otago (saloon)—Dr James Ellis and wife, Mr A. W. Bickerton and family, Mr F. Pattisom Mr J. P. Maxwell, Mr w. G. Kerle and wife, Mr W. R. Mason, Mr Thomas Scares, Mrs Winteringham and child, Mr H. J. Turner, Mr Walter Langden, Mr John Colmore, Mr Manly and family, and also 630 Government emigrants. The Mail S.S. Mongol took her departure last evening with the outward mail for San Francisco. Her passengers and luggage were conveyed on hoard by the p.s. Peninsula. The following passengers proceeded by her, besides those published in last night’s issue. For Ire-land—-Rev. Father Coleman. For San Francisco—Mr and Mrs. Guthrie, Mr J. Guthrie, Master and Miss Guthrie, Mr and Mrs Hancock and two children, Messrs Jefferey-Donald, Forster. For Lyttelton—Mr Smith. For Wellington—Mr Cullen. _ The barque Tasso, previously reported at the Hfcads frbnr Newcastle, was towed up by the tug Geelong last evening, and moored off Carey Bay. She left Newcastle on the 24th March, «md bad northerly and easterly winds until the Ist, when she spoke the barque Woodville, for Newcastle. On the 3rd she encountered a severe N.N.W. gale, and was hove-to for the whole day, which drove her to the southward
of Stewart's Island. The gale moderated on the 4th,buthad squally and variable winds along the coast, principally from the N., and made the Heads early yesterday morning. She brings 340 tons of coal. The N. Z. Company’s s.s. Phoebe arrived from Northern Ports at 3 p.m. yesterday. She left the Manakau on the Ist at 9 a.m., and arrived at Taranaki at 7 a.m. on the 2nd ; left again at 8 a.m. and crossed the Straits and arrived at Nelson at 10 p.m. same day ; left* again at 10 a.m. on the 3rd, and arrived at Picton at 6 p.m.; left again at 8 p.m. and arrived at Wellington at 1 a.m. on the 4th; left again for Lyttelton at 6 p.m. same day, arriving there at 1 p.m. on the sth; and left again at noon en the 6th and arrived at Oamaru at 6 a.m. on the 7th. The following appears in the ‘ Sydney Morning Herald’ of March 23 “We are informed
by the agents of the Eastern and Australian Mail Steam Company that they have received advice by telegram of the Sun Foo being ashore near Hong Kong, to which port she was on her way for the purpose of opening up direct communication between China and the Colonies, and it is feared that she will become a total wreck; and the agents for the company in the East have chartered the Jeddah to take her place, so that no interruption to the service will occur. The Jeddah is a new steamer, of about 100 tons larger capacity than the Sun Foo, and has very superior passenger accommodation. SHIPPING TELEGRAM.
