CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB AUTUMN MEETING.
[Bt Telegraph.] Christchurch, April 6, The first day’s racing went off very successfully, with, fine weather and a fair attendance, Seconding the efforts of the club in the cause of sport and in their initiation of an autumn meeting. The fields were, as a rule, exceedingly select, but the racing was for the most part quite up to the usual mark. The Trial Plate was a moral for Lnrline, who won as she pleased ; Malice, however, running very unkindly. For the Leger, four horses faced the starter. Papapa and Castanet being scratched; Castaway was greatly fancied, but ricked himself during the race, leaving Templeton and Kakapo to decide the issue. The former was admirably ridden by Ray, and ran a far better horse than was expected—so much so that his chances in the Autumn Handicap look rather rosy, Defamer who was dead amiss, was never in it from the start. In the Champagne Stakes, the pot boiled over, the knowing ones almost to a man standing on the Emmeline cult. The Waimoa filly would have had more support, but for the fact that she was -anything but fit. She however won the race very easily, Remnant, quite an outsider, coming in second, the favorite third. The Easter Handicap was a gift to.Calumny, Parawhenua being scratched. The following are the events in detail;— Trial Stakes, of 100 sovs. Mr Watt’s b m Lurlino, by Traducor,' dam Mermaid, i yrs (R. Lurline made the running from the jump, at once obtaining a lead of a good length, Parawhenua next, Malice lying back. They ran thus to the turn, when Malice went up to Parawhenua, both going rather wild. From this to the winning point Lurline went on with the running, and won easily hardheld, Parawhenua second, about half a length before Malice. Time, 2min. 21sec. The St. Lbqer Stakes of KjObovb., added to a sweepstakes of 10 sovs, J. Watt’s b c Kakapo, by Diomedes dam Toi-Toi (R. Mason) .... 2 F. A. Delamain’s b c Templeton * - -2 R. H. After a little fiddling at the post, the lot got fairly away together, Templeton, on the inside, having a trifle the best of it, and Defamer being last. After i.he first turn Kakapu went to the front, with Lempleton close up, Castaway third, and Defamer still acting as whipper-in. They ran thus to the mile-aud-a-quarter post, when Castaway passed Templeton and went up to Kakapo’s girths. They raced together for a few strides, when Castaway cried a-go—in fact, appeared to those en the stand to have broken down. Kakapo went on' with the running until the turn into the straight, when Templeton got on close terms with him, and ip to the distance post looked uncommonly dangerous. In the run home Kakapo stayed the longest and won by a length, Castaway third. Time, 3ixud, Sftsec,
