_ „ Auckland, March 30. The Governor arrived here yesterday in his yacht, which was towed here from Rangitotoby the steamer Rowena. ._ , , "WELLINGTON, March 30. The Independent states that the Government has under consideration a plan by which the masters and owners of vessels will be enabled to obtain information regarding sea and weather by telegraphic messages in cypher between them and the harbormasters at the various jiorts of the Colony, at the small cost of threepence for a message and reply. It is hoped that in a short time a satisfactory system of storm signals will be established. •_ To, Queenstown, March 30. Mr T. L. Shepherd’s proposal through Mr Pntchard, the Mayor of Arrowtown, that Mr Clarke should resign his Provincial Councillorship and allow him (Shepherd) to come forward, has been received with much merriment. Mr Clarke has no intention of resigning. Attention is being directed to the head of the Lake as a field for settlement. A well-knswn firm here offers encouragement to immigrants. Through the wood-cutters being thrown out of employment, all is confusion for a time, aud cutting has been suddenly stopped. Trade is remarkably dull, and the population is leaving the district.
