THE H.A.C.B.S. ANNIVERSARY SUPPER.
The first anniversary of the Hibernian Australian Catholic Benefit Society was cole-, brated by a supper, held in St. Joseph’s School-room last evening, -The attendance was very large- indeed larger than the most sanguine of the promoters of the entertainment could have anticipated. It appears that quite a rush was made for tickets in the afternoon, and the committee found it a matter of difficulty to obtain the necessary accommodation. Over 150 persons, ladies
and gentlemen, must have sat down to the supper, which was well laid by Mr Go Ur. The room was well decorated with evergreens and bunting,, a conspicuous ornament Being the branch’s new banner, which was displayed at the head of the loim. On the removal of the cloth, the health of the Pope and the usual loyal toasts were given and heartily received. . In responding to “ The Superintendent and Provincial Council,” with which his name had been coupled, Mr Reeves, M.P.C., congratulated the Society on introducing the custom of admitting ladies to their entertainmentsi '
In proposing the toast’of f the evening—- ** Success to the H. A.C B.S.,”—the Chairman (Bro. Robert Carroll, President of the Society,) took occasion to present Bro. F. Bro. Bunny, in replying, expressed his heartf* It gratitude to the' Society for the gift, which would .be more prized by him since he know that it was not the gift qf a te'tf;- hut the spontaneous ’ act of oncers and members of the branch. ’ It was hot fair to ®pcord tym (Mr Biinpy) all ihe praise, as mpch was due to the co-opera'iqn yyhich he had received from Bro. E. Carroll, the part President, apd some other uiembers. After referring at some length to the' difficulties that had been encountered, h® noticed a : paragraph in thr ‘ Bruce Herald, 5 ih which the society was playfully connected with Orangeism, and raid that so long as the H, A. 0,8 S, stuck to its principles it had
nothing to fear from Orangeisra. The other toasts were the Mayor and City Council, replied to by Councillor Barnes—“ Kindred Societies, 55 “Th® Diy we Celebrate,” “.Our Adopted Country, 55 “ The Society's, Medical Attendant, Dr. “The Ladies,” and tho “ Press. 55 During tho evening some enjoyable music was played by Messrs Connell (violin), and Sykes (piano).
