WASTE LAND BOARD.
The usual meeting of the Board was held to day. Present—Commissioners Thomp bod, Keid, Butterworth, Strode, and Bastings.
Captain Mackenzie applied, in terms of flections 9S and 99, Waste lands Act, 1872, to the Board to agree as to the amount of compensation which should he paid him for lands on his run 168 disposed of under sec tion 47, vide resolution of Provincial Council, July 23, 1873, and ‘Provincial Govern went Gazette,’ December 17, 1873. The applicant appeared and stated that whai he wanted was that the Board should agree with him as to a rate which he should ask Government for as compensation for fifi eeu or eighteen hundred acres of his rmwhich had been taken possession of by the Government under tlie deferred payment system.—Mr Bastings explained that the applicant had got the 18,000 acres of land without competition, on the distinct understanding that he should not bo entitled to receive compensation. It was eventually dicided that the whole question at issue be referred to the Provincial Solicitor for advice. Captain Mackenzie asked the Beard to make and allow a reduction of rent from the date of sale in terms of covenant on run 168. The application was referred to the Government
Mr Gillies, of Gillies and Street, applied for re-heaiing of application to lease block 11 and 12, Hawksbury reserve, for the municipality of West Hawksbury. The Board decided to communicate with the H aw ksbury municipality for its opinion on the point. An application was made by Mr W. St. Paul Gellibrand to purchase sections 66 and 67, block I, Waikouaiti district. The application was refused.
Messrs Howorth and Hodgkins requested information as to who is Provincial Solicitor since Mr Tnrton’s resignation The reply was that Mr Uaggitt was acting for the Government. The Committee of the Tokomairiro Athenteum made an application reapecting Crown grants for their endowment, having had an offer for leasing it. The Board decided it had no power to interfere. The Secretary of Lands forwarded a memorandum requesting the Waste Land Board to take such steps as might be necessary to secure to Mr Breraner that portion of section 7, blopk 37, Tokomaiririro District, which the Government agreed to purchase for him, in part compensation for deviation pf road. To be sold as land of special value.
The Board, next considered the objection of Mr Andrew Allan, on behalf of the Progress Committee of Tapanui, to leasing the Coal Reserve near the Township of Gore, applied for by Mr Younger. Referred to Ranger for advice.
The application of Mr James Pettigrew, to purchase sections 23, 24, and 44, block 4, Table Hill district. Application referred back to the district officer for further information.
The application of Mr Patrick O’Brien, to lease four acres in the Nevis Valley for coalmining purposes. A monthly license, under the 161st c ause of the Act, on the runholder’s consent being obtained, was agreed to.
Mr George Kirk applied to purchase the freehold of his agricultural lease, section 4, block 11, kipper’s Creek district, and letter of Warden. The application was refused.
