THE COUNTRY.
Clyde.—News of an abundant harvest is reaching us daily from all parts of the district, in Wai Keri Keri Valley, and on the disputed spur and neighborhood under the Dunstan range the largest yields appear to be. The total amount of oats grown in the district we do not hear, but the yield is estimated to be from sixty down to thirty-five bushels to the acre.
The Lakes.—The harvest is all pretty well gathered in, the stacking of the grain only wanting completion; so far as the yield goes it is all that could be desired, and farmers have cause to be thankful. Oats in quantity are worth 3s per bushel, but I do not think this price will hold, as there is no demand except for local wants, prices here being chiefly ruled by your market, which appears to be abundantly supplied. Barley will realise about ss, several engagements to sell this season’s crop at that fm Ce ha . vin & keen entered into a month since. Wheat is unsaleable at any price, the stocks of flour on hand being said to be amply sufficient for the next twelve month 3to come. However the latter part of the year will doubtless bring about a change, when the large supplies now on hand will become reduced, and means must be taken to replenish them. This over-abundance will not be likely to occur again, as farmers are determined to considerably restrict their operations next season, which, if adhered to, will keep wheat at something like a paying figure. The potato crop is a good one, but the quantity grown is small, so many lots having been allowed to waste last season for want of a market. Cheap bread also lessens the consumption of this vegetable, miners not caring to be bothered with cooking them when bread is procurable at 7d aud 8d the 41b loaf.
