THE OPERA.

A season of English operas is to be commenced at the Princess Theatre this evening by VI r G. B. A alien’s Hoyal Company, which has just completed a very successful season in New South Wales, from which Colony, .as well as Victoria, it comes with the highest recommen-1 atiou. The favorite Maritana,” which is the opera announced for presentation this evening, will introduce to the Dunedin public many new faces, but not a few old acquaintances. The prinia donna , Vliss May (Mrs Allan), we shall hear for the first timej; but she is not unknown to musical lame. She belongs entirely to the Melbourne stage; but her three years’ occupancy of it have been marked by perseverance and hard study, which have enabled her to secure a favorable position in public esteem wherever she has appeared. We venture to predict for her similar success here, Messrs Hallam and Rain ford are old friends, and both have improved considerably since they were here before. Mr. Templeton, the baritone, is also well spoken of. The accessories of the operas will be as complete as possible. The chnus is strong, and includes some welltrained voices ; the band ia an excellent one and will be led by M. Fleury, with Mr Anderson as pianist. Mr Willis has painted entirely new scenery.
