After a trial of several . hours, ana all the best hawsers' having partedi it was thought-expedient to lighten’ the Macgregor forward atld await the night’s tide. It was found, after consultation, that this would occupy too much timo r and it was thought advisable to tranfer all the mails and passengers to Tartar. This was accomplished, and the Tartar went outside the reef yßhout the pilot'at 7 p.rq. Captain Grainger 18 confident that, on i-eihpving all thq coal and cargo, aft, the ship will proceed to Sydney without 'further- delay. The sole blame of the mishap is attributable to the pilot, as with ordinary caution no danger need be incurred in entering the harbor ot Kankavau by day. When the bghts now being placed there .are in position, it equally safe at night.
