Messrs Shaw, Saville and Co.’s barque, Anazi, from London, went ashore at Donald’s Bay, three miles beyond Lake Takapuna, at four, o’clock on Sunday (yesterday) morning. The accident is" : unaccountable, as : it was a bright moonlight night with only a moderate breeze. , The ship is resting on a sandy bottom, and not leaking. The steamer Golden Crown has gone to endeavor to , tow her off. The cargo is valued at L 47,000. She has twelve passengers, " but rib - Government immigrants. The captain states that he was called two or three zdiiiutes before she struck, when it was too late to prevent the disaster; that had the second officer called him earlier, the stranding might have been avoided. Some of the-passengers say .that the captain had been at the wheel for some time before the mishap occurred, and blame him for the accident. It Is further stated that after the vessel struck the passengers and crew threatened to lash the captain to the mast, in older that the passengers might ■ leave the ship, as he was desirous of preventing them. He then consented; The passengers had their wants attended to by Messrs Maokay, Robinson, and others residing in the vicinity. It is doubtful whether the vessel can be got off. The Anazi is insured. Her voyage from London does not seem to. have been a pleasant one. On one occasion the storeroom caught fire and burned about an hour and a half before the flames were extinguished. About a fortnight since the steward is stated to have committed suicide by jumping overboard, it is alleged, in consequence of the captain’s oenduct towards him.
