Tuesday, February 24. (Before Judge Bathgate.) Vagrancy,— Anne Campbell was charged with having no visible lawful means of sup. port.—Constable Rooney said that he had not known prisoner to do any work since she came from Invercargill about live weeks ago. She was frequently in brothels. His Honor considered her an idle and disorderly person within the meaning of the Act, and sentenced her to ten days’ imprisonment byjway of a caution. Illegally Detaining Private Property.—Henry Boxwcll was charged by Fred Robinson, a man of color, and popularly known as “ Snowball,” with detaining what appeared to be, on the charge being read over, an inexhaustible supply of kitchen utensils, furniture, &c. Defendant'denied having any knowledge of the things. Complainant, who described himself as “ a man who gathered bottles, bones, rags, old clothes, or any other thing that he could get a penny out of,” said that defendant unlawfully detained the things stated in the plaint. While he was away from home, defendant went to his house, and took the things to his place in Pall Mall, where witness saw them on the 14th instant. The things there which he could identify were two boxes and a bed.--His Worship: What kind of a bed was it?— Witness : A bed you sleep on, to be sure. —His Worship ; I know that, but what is it made of ?—Witness : Straw and ticking, and not of feathers, I value it at os, 'J here was also a table, my property, worth ss; a “ sofey ” of the same value, two sauce-pans, a stew iu-pan, an American camp oven, woith from 4s to ss; a seat of a cart which ccab “four bob,” and sundry other things, including things not mentioned in the plaint—viz., a hat box and other boxes. Other evidence having been given, the case was dismissed.
